Fiddler crab

Fiddler crab(T. arcuata)

Crustacea | Ocypodidae
Tubuca arcuata

Characteristics

On the mudflat of the Gaomei Wetlands, the bowed fiddler crab is no doubt the most numerous fiddler crab species. Its eyestalks and chelae are red, and its back has net-like patterns of black and white stripes. Adults range in size from 2 to 5 cm. The bowed fiddler crab often builds a chimney-like sediment structure at the entrance of its burrow, especially among small individuals and females.
Habits: When the tide ebbs, the bowed fiddler crab grabs soil around its burrow and builds a chimney-like structure outside the burrow. When the tide rises, the crab digs soil to seal the burrow.

Distribution

The bowed fiddler crab is one of the most common species in the mudflats at Gaomei Wetlands. Tourists can also observe these crabs from the wooden walkway.
